There’s something quietly magical about starting the day with yarn in hand and the promise of bringing a soft little creature to life. At HugChums, every amigurumi is made with intention, love, and lots of little steps — and today, I’d love to take you behind the scenes of what a typical day in my life looks like as a crochet artisan.

☀️ Morning Calm: Coffee, Lists, and Yarn

I usually start the morning with a warm cup of coffee or tea and a quiet moment to check emails, messages, and orders. I go over what I need to make that day — which characters, what stage each one is at, and any custom requests from customers.

I prepare materials for the day: pick yarn colors, match up hooks, and lay out stuffing, safety eyes, and tools like my Clover and Tulip hooks (yes, I’m picky about tools — they make a huge difference in comfort and quality!).

🧵 Mid-Morning: Crochet in Motion

By late morning, I’m deep into stitching. Sometimes I’m working on amigurumi with multiple parts — ears, arms, legs — and sometimes it’s a single shape like a plush heart or flower. This is a rhythm I love. The loop-pull-turn motion becomes meditative. I count stitches, shape forms, and watch as little things start to come to life.

This part of the day is also when I need to be most focused. One wrong stitch or skipped row means “frogging” (undoing the work), which every crocheter knows too well. But the feeling of a form taking shape makes every minute worth it.

🎧 My Companions: Music, Podcasts & Peace

To keep my hands busy and my mind engaged, I usually listen to music or cozy podcasts about small business, creativity, or just gentle background stories. It helps me stay inspired while working for hours.

Sometimes I post progress on Instagram stories or answer questions from crochet lovers or customers who want updates on their orders.

🧸 Afternoon: Assembly, Details & Finishing Touches

After the crocheting is done, I start assembling the parts. This is one of the trickiest and most rewarding parts of amigurumi — stitching small arms, legs, ears, and accessories onto the body and getting them just right.

I use pearl polyfill to stuff the pieces — it gives a nice smooth, plush finish. Then I embroider eyes, smiles, or blush on the cheeks, using my favorite Clover embroidery needles for precision.

This is where the personality really comes through — every Hugchums piece has its own little spark of character.

💌 Evening: Wrap-Up & Prep

Toward the end of the day, I prepare finished items for packaging and shipping. I double-check names, addresses, and often write a short handwritten thank-you note — because every order means the world to me.

If I have custom orders or requests to review, I use the evening to sketch notes or plan tomorrow’s work. I also take product photos if needed, organize yarn stock, or clean up my space (crochet messes are very real!).

💖 The Quiet Joy of Handmade Life

Being a crochet artisan means living slowly and intentionally. It’s about doing work that brings warmth and smiles to others, even if it’s just one stitch at a time.

Some days are peaceful, others are full of tangled yarn and aching fingers — but every day reminds me how lucky I am to turn love and string into something real. That’s the heart of HugChums.
